Description

The Academy of St. Joseph (AoSJ) is a small, independent Catholic PK–8 school in New York City's West Village, built on a mission of forming students in character, competence, and compassion. We are a community where teachers know their students deeply, relationships are at the heart of the work, and great teachers are given room to do their best work.

We are seeking a Middle School Math Teacher to join our Upper School team for the 2026–27 school year.

About the Role

This position covers one section each of Grades 5 through 8, with class sizes that allow for real differentiation and genuine student connection. Our math program is grounded in the Singapore Math approach (Math in Focus), with an emphasis on conceptual understanding, problem-solving, and student discourse.

AoSJ is a school where teachers have a real voice in curriculum, where small class sizes make meaningful instruction possible, and where the right person will find room to grow alongside a community that is genuinely invested in getting better.

This role is ideal for a teacher who thrives in a close-knit school community, values collaboration, and is excited by the opportunity to shape curriculum and engage deeply with students.

Responsibilities

  • Teach one section each of Grades 5, 6, 7, and 8 math
  • Plan and deliver lessons that prioritize conceptual understanding, problem-solving, and student thinking
  • Differentiate instruction to meet a range of readiness levels within each class
  • Build a classroom environment grounded in strong routines, clear expectations, and positive relationships
  • Integrate Catholic values and faith formation naturally into the life of the classroom
  • Use New York City as a resource — through field work, partnerships, and real-world problem-solving that connects math to the world students live in
  • Serve as a middle school advisor and lead a small group of students in their academic and personal growth

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mathematics or related field
  • Teaching certification in Mathematics (grades 5-8)
  • Experience teaching math in a middle school setting
  • Strong understanding of the Singapore Math approach (Math in Focus)
  • Ability to differentiate instruction for a range of readiness levels
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Commitment to Catholic values and faith formation
