READING SPECIALIST, Appointment: .75 FTE (School Year), Reports to: Program Coordinator–Learning Support

Job Description: The Reading Specialist will support, supplement, and extend classroom instruction, working collaboratively with classroom teaching teams to meet the learning needs of students identified through Universal Screening, informal classroom assessment, IEP evaluation, and/or Third Grade Reading Guarantee. This individual is responsible for providing direct services to off-track students (decoding/encoding, fluency, and comprehension) as well as monitoring the progress of students receiving reading support across the building (K - 8). The Reading Specialist will work collaboratively with the Learning Support Program Coordinator to ensure that student literacy needs are met (K-8) and will take a lead in consulting with teachers about best practices in classroom-based literacy instruction.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide small group targeted reading intervention in the resource room.
  • Consult with Administration and Classroom-based teams on Tier 1 literacy practices.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers, Student Support Team, and parents.
  • Participate in ongoing school-wide benchmarking assessments (MAP).
  • Exhibit familiarity and experience with structured literacy-based interventions such as:
  • Wilson Reading Program
  • Fundations
  • Just Words
  • Orton-Gillingham

Required Qualifications:

The successful candidate must have a Bachelor’s degree in Education and have licensure as an Intervention Specialist. The candidate must have experience providing SOR-based literacy interventions using a structured multi-sensory program such as Wilson or Orton-Gillingham. Qualified candidates will have experience teaching grade-school aged students (K-8).
