The Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School in Rockville, MD is seeking candidates to fill a long-term sub position of Middle School Tanakh Teacher for the start of the 2026-2027 school year.

Members of the Jewish Text department work collaboratively in designing and delivering an outstanding Torah education to middle school students in a supportive, engaging and rich environment which values the whole child.

The ideal candidate is a creative, charismatic educator with expertise in Bible/Tanakh and a broad range of Judaic Studies topics. They embody and embrace Jewish pluralism and are talented at fostering Jewish identity development using a wide array of pedagogical tools both inside and outside the classroom.

The ideal candidate has at least three years of teaching experience. Leading candidates have demonstrated success at and enjoy collaborating as an active member of a team, are comfortable teaching in and promoting a pluralistic environment that emphasizes Jewish text skills and identity development.

The ideal candidate has strong interpersonal skills, is comfortable with and skilled at working with a wide range of learners, has demonstrated success in integrating positive behavior management in neuro-diverse classrooms, and enjoys working with young adolescents.

Fluency with technology required.

Responsibilities include:

  • Teaching four sections of Tanakh to middle school students in grades 7-8;
  • Lesson planning, grading, and communicating with students and families regarding student learning;
  • Participating in team meetings to coordinate and refine curricula;
  • Participating in meetings with counselors, colleagues, and other stakeholders to support student learning and well-being.

Requirements

  • At least three years of teaching experience;
  • Expertise in Bible/Tanakh and a broad range of Judaic Studies topics;
  • Ability to foster Jewish identity development in a pluralistic environment;
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with a wide range of learners;
  • Fluency with technology;
  • Ability to integrate positive behavior management in neuro-diverse classrooms.
