Description

We are looking for a Special Education Teacher to provide students in grades 1 through 8 with learning activities and experiences designed to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth.

Achievement Unlocked is a small private, special education school in downtown Brooklyn. You will be responsible for developing or modifying curricula and preparing lessons and other instructional materials to student ability levels. Additionally, you will implement strategies that reach students who need accelerated content in some subject areas and remediation in others and incorporate students’ interests in order to engage learning. This position requires flexibility, a growth mindset and the willingness to partner with support staff and foster collaboration as a team.

Responsibilities

  • Write curriculum and scope & sequence for the year based on common core standards
  • Understand the content area of your subject and pull in relevant current information
  • Allow for various modes of learning and allow students to use varied formats to demonstrate an understanding of content
  • Write narrative reports three times per year and weekly glows and grows for all students
  • Complete CPI training provided by the school
  • Create an environment that fosters competence, autonomy, and relatedness to others
  • Motivate students to do hard work
  • Be familiar with our niche population and have the skills to be successful with them
  • Help students develop appropriate social skills
  • Be able to deescalate confrontations, manage anger, and help students control their impulses
  • Teach executive functioning skills and strategies

Requirements

  • Certification in Special Education
  • Experience working with students with special needs
  • Strong understanding of Common Core standards
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with support staff
