McLean School, a K-12 co-educational independent school in Potomac, Maryland, seeks applicants for the full-time K-12 Reading and Humanities Instructional Leader to begin in August 2026.

Position Overview

The K-12 Reading and Humanities Instructional Leader is an instructional leadership role that prioritizes schoolwide reading leadership, oversight of the humanities program, and instructional coaching. Building on strong instructional practice across divisions, the role provides strategic leadership for reading instruction across K-12, including assessment systems, instructional approaches, and professional learning that support strong literacy outcomes for all learners. The position also oversees the English, Literature, and History Departments, ensuring alignment of reading and writing expectations and of humanities instruction across grades and divisions, while coaching faculty through observation, feedback, and collaborative planning in partnership with Division Heads, aligned with McLean’s mission and the principles of the McLean Abilities Model.

Job Responsibilities

Reading Leadership

  • Provide schoolwide vision for reading instruction in coordination with Lower (K-4) and Middle School (Grades 5-8) Reading Specialists and Coordinators of Learning Service
  • Develop and implement schoolwide reading assessments and evaluation systems
  • Collaborate with faculty to design and implement reading instructional approaches
  • Provide professional learning opportunities for faculty to support strong literacy outcomes

Humanities Program Oversight

  • Oversee the English, Literature, and History Departments
  • Ensure alignment of reading and writing expectations and of humanities instruction across grades and divisions
  • Coach faculty through observation, feedback, and collaborative planning

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field
  • Master’s degree in Education or related field preferred
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in instructional leadership or teaching
  • Experience working with students with diverse learning needs and abilities
  • Strong knowledge of reading instruction and assessment
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
