Description

Fryeburg Academy, a 700-student day and boarding high school located in Western Maine/the Mount Washington Valley, seeks an Special Education teacher beginning in the fall of 2026. This full-time position involves meeting the academic support needs for a caseload of students as a member of each student's wrap-around team. The last three weeks of each school year are a stand-alone period called May Term in which teachers offer non-traditional classes focusing on experiential learning or using knowledge in new contexts; this teacher will also teach May Term classes.

Fryeburg Academy faculty have responsibilities connected with the school's boarding program and extracurricular offerings. The Academy seeks individuals who enjoy working with high school students in and out of the classroom and who wish to strengthen its community through a commitment to various roles.

Essential Job Functions

  • Serve as case manager for 12-17 students who have been identified as students with disabilities requiring an IEP and Specially Designated Instruction
  • Serve as an advisor for a group of 10 -14 students
  • Serve on a dorm team

  • Ability to work with, encourage, and inspire students to seek continuous growth
  • A willingness to work with students from a variety of backgrounds and with a variety of abilities
  • An understanding of how students learn
  • Ability and desire to plan high-quality instruction, assess student learning, reflect on pedagogical effectiveness, and adjust approach as needed
  • Working knowledge of individually administered academic/achievement testing; able to test, score and write reports
  • Experience using Orton-Gillingham or other systematic approaches to reading instruction

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Special Education or related field
  • Experience working with students with disabilities
  • Knowledge of Maine state and federal regulations regarding special education
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and other stakeholders
