About NCCS and the Upper School

New Canaan Country School is a co-ed, independent day school for students in Pre-K (ages 3 & 4) through Grade 9 living in Fairfield and Westchester Counties. Located in New Canaan, CT, and serving 570 students, our mission is to guide students to reach their intellectual, creative, moral, and physical potential. A talented and devoted faculty engages our students in developmentally appropriate ways, delivering a challenging curriculum that builds intellectual skills and fosters creative and critical thinking. We lead by example and challenge students to fulfill their potential, find their path, and follow their passions, whether in the classroom, on the playing fields, on the stage, or serving the community.

The Upper School at Country School serves students in Grades 7 through 9 and provides them with the opportunity to acquire habits of mind and dispositions, including collaboration, analytical and critical thinking, communication, perseverance and risk-taking. The school is now searching for an Upper School Math Teacher and Math Department Chair to join its faculty in August 2026.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct a standard load (typically 4 sections) of mathematics courses in Grades 7-9, including planning, instruction, assessment, and reporting as well as being accessible and available to students for support during designated times
  • Serve as an advisor to a group of Upper School students within a grade-level advisory team
  • Serve as head or assistant coach to Upper School teams in multiple seasons
  • Fulfill additional student-facing responsibilities of Upper School faculty members, including recess, study hall, clubs and multi-day trips
  • Engage in faculty meetings and professional development programs at department, team, division and whole school levels
  • Provides leadership for the department by facilitating collaboration, planning, and communication among faculty members.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mathematics or related field required; Master's degree preferred
  • Teaching experience in a middle school or high school setting, preferably in a co-ed, independent school
  • Proven ability to teach a range of mathematics courses, including algebra, geometry, and pre-calculus
  • Strong leadership and communication skills, with experience in department chair or similar roles
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and adapt to changing circumstances
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in teaching and learning practices
