Description

Work Term: Academic School Year

Direct Report: Director of Arts

Friends Academy is seeking a creative, technically proficient, and values-driven Media & Studio Arts Teacher to join our Visual Arts Department. This role is designed for an educator who can bridge the gap between traditional darkroom techniques and cutting-edge digital storytelling while fostering an environment of reflection, integrity, and community.

The ideal candidate will guide students to use media not just for technical mastery, but as a medium for finding their voice and exploring the world with a discerning, ethical lens.

The successful candidate will enthusiastically and actively engage in the full life of the school, including faculty meetings, theater events, back to school nights, and departmental and divisional meetings after school.

Essential Responsibilities: The following duties are representative of the role; responsibilities may evolve to meet the needs of the department and school community:

  • Teach digital and darkroom photography, leading students in concept development, composition, digital editing and darkroom development.
  • Instruct upper school students in filmmaking, including the full production cycle (story development, storyboarding, cinematography, lighting, sound, and editing).
  • Teach two to four sections of middle school art, a curriculum which blends digital and traditional mediums.
  • Film and edit arts functions including theater productions and concerts, making them available to the community in a timely manner.
  • Assess and evaluate student performance, providing constructive feedback and support.
  • Organize and display student artwork around the school and at regular arts shows in the gallery space.
  • Collaborate with colleagues, parents, and community members to promote the arts program and foster a sense of community.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts, Art Education, or related field.
  • Master's degree or higher in Fine Arts, Art Education, or related field preferred.
  • Teaching experience in a middle and upper school setting, preferably in a private or independent school.
  • Strong technical skills in photography, filmmaking, and digital media.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and engage with students, parents, and community members.
  • Flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced environment.
