Role and Purpose:

The Upper School English Teacher will be responsible for delivering high-quality instruction in secondary English curriculum. The successful teacher will engage students in critical thinking, will foster a passion for literature, will refine effective writing skills, and will prepare students for academic success in advanced English courses. The role involves designing lesson plans, assessing student progress, and creating a supportive classroom environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement lesson plans that fulfill the school’s requirements and expectations and show evidence of preparation as required, including but not limited to posting on the school’s learning management system.
  • Implement relevant and authentic pedagogical strategies, while being mindful of diverse learning styles. Appropriately incorporate technology to enhance student learning.
  • Keep abreast of current educational research, trends, and best practices to help inform the planning of instructional activities.
  • Help students analyze and improve study methods and habits.
  • Provide formative and summative assessments, offering clear and personalized feedback to support student progress.
  • Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and is appropriate for the physical, social and emotional development of students.
  • Manage student behavior in accordance with the student handbook.
  • Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, administration, and teachers.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents and community members.
  • Engage actively with the Oakridge community by participating in events, providing support to students, and positively promoting the school in all communications.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Division Head.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in English or related field.
  • Teaching certification or licensure.
  • Experience in teaching English at the secondary level.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with students, parents, and colleagues.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to adapt to changing circumstances and priorities.
